IP Packet Level vBNS Tra c Analysis and Modeling

چکیده
In order to ensure continued availability of high-performance network for the nation's research and education community and to continue supporting the development of new high performance Internet capabilities, the National Science Foundation (NSF) established the very-high-speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS) through a cooperative agreement with MCI telecommunications Corporation. To ensure quality of service (QoS) provided by vBNS, an important task is to understand characteristics of vBNS tra c. In this paper we show that vBNS tra c has long-range-dependent (LRD) properties, which have been observed in LAN, WAN, WWW, and VBR video tra c traces. However, we also show that the burstiness of vBNS tra c varies from trace to trace, indicating considerable spatial variations of tra c features, and cannot be characterized by the Hurst parameter. We develop a generalized multifractal model for vBNS tra c. The model contains two parameters, is easy to construct, and generates short-range-dependent processes and ideal multiplicative multifractal processes as special cases. The power of the proposed process in modeling the vBNS tra c is

Long-Range-Dependence and Multifractal modeling of vBNS Tra c
In this paper we analyze a number of IP packet level very-high-speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS) tra c traces collected by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR) measurement and analysis group passive monitors at a number of highperformance connection (HPC) sites. Speci cally, we show that the vBNS tra c traces also have long-range...

متن کاملWide-Area IP Multicast Traffic Characterization
IP multicast is gaining acceptance among service providers as the protocols and infrastructure mature. Yet characteristics of multicast traffic remain poorly understood. Using passive OC-12 monitors we observe multicast traffic on links connecting aggregated customers and peer networks to our native multicast backbone network. We first refine existing traffic flow profiling methodologies via an...

After several years of research, we now have the capability of modeling the Internet at scales on the order of 100,000 multi-protocol hosts (IP, TCP, client/server applications) and routers (OSPF, BGP-4), with long-range correlated IP packet tra c [1]. Getting to this point required the design of a scalable Internet modeling framework (SSFNET), a scalable simulation framework (SSF), and a high{...
